M Health Fairview expands adolescent mental healthcare with Edina programs
As the youth mental health crisis continues to impact communities across Minnesota, M Health Fairview is expanding access to care with two new outpatient treatment programs in Edina.
The expansion comes ahead of the new school year, as nearly half of Minnesota’s teens report struggling with mental health challenges. Our health system is building a broader system of support in urban, suburban, and rural communities that reflects the complex realities teens face today, including anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and the cumulative effects of trauma, racism, and systemic inequities.
“Every teen, in every community, deserves access to mental health care close to home,” said Jacquetta Blacker, BMBCh, MA, outpatient medical director of child and adolescent services at M Health Fairview and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. “Our goal is to provide accessible care that recognizes each teen’s lived experience, helps them heal, and gives them tools to build the resilience they need to thrive at home, in school, and in their communities.”
Located at Southdale Place, 3400 West 66th Street in Edina, the programs run for four to six weeks, offering two levels of care to teens ages 14 to 18:
· Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Adolescents attend after school for three hours a day, five days a week.
· Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Adolescents receive a higher level of care, attending seven hours each day, five days a week. The program includes two hours of daily academic instruction from School District 287.
Both programs support teens experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and other serious challenges. Through close collaboration with local school districts and public health departments, our mental health experts identified the leading mental health challenges impacting teens in the area—among them is a pervasive drive toward perfectionism that’s fueling significant academic and social pressures.
A multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychiatric nurses, and occupational therapists offer individual, group, and family therapy; music and art therapy; medication management; and nursing care. Each care plan is tailored to the individual, using evidence-based approaches.
A full continuum of care
M Health Fairview has similar adolescent day treatment programs in Minneapolis, Crystal, Maplewood, and Princeton.
If a teen enrolled in one of our day treatment programs needs more intensive treatment, our care team can connect families to higher levels of care within its full continuum of mental health services. As the largest provider of mental health care in the Upper Midwest, M Health Fairview remains committed to increasing access to whole-person, compassionate care, including same-day access to behavioral health services.
“These programs are designed to meet young people where they are—emotionally and academically—without sacrificing their education. Whether they’re struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, isolation, or simply feeling overwhelmed, they deserve to be met with empathy, respect, and real support,” said Chris Beamish, MHA, MSW, service line executive of mental health and addiction at M Health Fairview. “It’s part of our broader commitment to expanding access to mental health services in every community we serve—so every young person has the opportunity to heal, grow, stay on track in school, and thrive.
