M Health Fairview expands mental health services in Forest Lake community
For people experiencing mental health concerns, such as mood disorders, anxiety, suicidal ideation, or difficulty functioning at home or at work, getting care close to home can make a difference. It allows people to be near loved ones who can provide support.
M Health Fairview has expanded access to two outpatient mental health programs in Forest Lake. The programs fill gaps in mental health north of the metro area. In addition, M Health Fairview has reopened a substance use disorder (SUD) program.
“Forest Lake has been a desert for mental health,” said psychiatrist Steven Shipman, MD. “Folks from that area have been going to our Riverside location in Minneapolis for support, but we don’t want people to have to travel that far from home.”
Located at 20 Lake St. N., Forest Lake, the mental health programs run for a few weeks, offering two levels of care for adults:
- Partial Hospitalization Program: The program is six hours a day, five days a week to provide a high level of support.
- Intensive Outpatient Program: Often a step-down or alternative to partial hospitalization. It runs three hours per day, four days per week.
Both programs support adults experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, or other serious challenges that affect their ability to participate in work, community, and family life. The programs allow people to remain in their home and in the community while receiving care and improving their ability to cope with life stressors.
A multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychotherapists, registered nurses, and occupational therapists offer individual, group, and family therapy; occupational therapy; and medication management. Each care plan is tailored to the individual, using evidence-based approaches.
Substance use disorder program
The recently reopened substance use disorder program is designed for people who are experiencing substance use disorders (SUD) along with mental health concerns.
SUD includes misuse of prescription medication and/or problematic use of alcohol or legal and illegal drugs. It’s a treatable mental condition that affects a person’s brain and behavior. SUD often occurs alongside a mental health diagnosis, such as depression or anxiety.
As the largest provider of mental health care in the Upper Midwest, M Health Fairview remains committed to increasing access to whole-person, compassionate care, including same-day access to behavioral health services.
