Hepatitis is a term used to describe inflammation of the liver. Sudden onset of liver inflammation in children (pediatric acute hepatitis) is rare. Hepatitis in children is often caused by an infection, but many times the exact cause is unknown. Symptoms of hepatitis include jaundice, lack of energy, and loss of appetite along with fever, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. The majority of children with pediatric acute hepatitis recover with supportive care, however, a small percentage of cases will progress to liver failure and require a life-saving liver transplant.
