Our approach

Neurologic or muscle disorders like muscular dystrophy almost always affect the muscles, like the diaphragm, that move air into and out of the lungs. As these muscles weaken over time, it can become difficult for people to breathe, and they may require assistive equipment.

Pediatric pulmonologists with M Health Fairview Pediatrics work alongside other multidisciplinary experts to provide comprehensive care for both children and adults with a muscular dystrophy or other neuromuscular disorders. We conduct assessments at least annually, or more often if required. We can also monitor breathing patterns to make sure your child or family member is breathing sufficiently. If the patient is experiencing low overnight oxygen levels, we can conduct overnight oximetry or sleep studies for children of any age. We can also perform standard lung function testing in school-age children.

Based on your child’s needs and assessment results, we partner with your family to develop a treatment plan. Treatment might include methods to enhance airway clearance (for example, a Cough Assist device) to full mechanical breathing support.
