The Center for Safe and Healthy Children at University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital is dedicated to providing medical care for victims and potential victims of child abuse and neglect. 

Overview

We provide comprehensive consultation, education and support for medical providers, community agencies and caregivers. We see children in hospital settings including inpatient units, emergency departments, and specialty clinics.

Our approach

We are a refuge. We provide medical care for children and adolescents who are victims or possible victims of:

  • Sexual abuse
  • Physical abuse
  • Other forms of child maltreatment including:
    • Neglect
    • Medical neglect
    • Drug exposure
    • Emotional abuse

Programs and services 

  • Abuse and neglect prevention
  • In-house consultation services
  • On-call (24/7) pediatrician who specializes in child abuse and responds to providers' questions and concerns regarding possible child maltreatment
  • Specialized medical and multidisciplinary training for providers, medical students, residents and other community professionals who respond to child maltreatment
