Overview

Childhood is a time for learning and growing, and every child develops new skills and abilities at their own pace. Some children and adolescents with developmental or behavioral challenges may need extra support and professional guidance to help them reach their full potential.

At M Health Fairview, our developmental-behavioral pediatricians help young people improve their social skills, communication, and behavior, and support them with their ongoing development. We have a longstanding tradition of excellence in this field, with close-knit ties to the community and a strong connection to the groundbreaking research and resources of University of Minnesota’s Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) program.

If your child has special developmental or behavioral needs, we can provide them with care from the earliest stages of their development to adulthood and beyond, so they are supported in their journey as a valued community member cross their lifespan.

Our approach

Our mission is to help your child achieve their greatest potential. When we see young people in our care master a new skill or overcome a difficult behavior, we can’t help but cheer alongside them, and share in their sense of accomplishment.

As Developmental-Behavioral Pediatricians, we serve children and adolescents with a wide range of challenges and disabilities. We provide behavioral and developmental assessments and collaborate with other medical professionals to determine a diagnosis. Some of the conditions that we specialize in treating are listed here:

  • Developmental disabilities
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Adjusting to and coping with chronic medical conditions
  • Learning and attention disorders
  • Urination or defecation problems (Enuresis and encopresis)
  • Pain, sleep, and psychophysiological disorders
  • Anxiety and mood disorders
  • Stress challenges
  • Habit problems

Each child is unique in the specific symptoms they experience, and some may have a combination of different challenges that affect their daily lives. We’ll work with you and your child to develop a tailored treatment plan that matches their situation and goals for improvement. Here are some of the common treatment options we offer:

  • Self-regulation (self-hypnosis)
  • Computerized biofeedback
  • Mindfulness-based stress reduction
  • Parent guidance in effective management strategies for a variety of psychophysiological and behavioral problems
  • Treatment groups for children with autism spectrum disorders and related social communication problems
  • Treatment groups focused on anxiety management, social skills, and transitioning to adulthood.

If your child has a need for our services, they can get care at Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain (MIDB), a one-stop clinic and research institute powered by our partnership with the University of Minnesota that specializes in care for children with neurobehavioral conditions. Our health system is also home to a groundbreaking Birth to Three Program, which focuses on helping children during an early, critical developmental phase.

With over 4,000 patient visits a year, our clinicians have the training and expertise to help your child or adolescent overcome learning, behavioral, and emotional difficulties. We will provide them with the skills, support, and treatment that will help them reach their goals and full potential.
