Our approach

M Health Fairview Pediatrics brings a world of comprehensive, compassionate cancer care to your child and your family. Our nationally renowned teams of experts treat all types of childhood cancers, working together to create new and better treatments while keeping your family at the center of everything we do.

Pediatric medical oncologists are doctors with special training to diagnose and treat cancer. Unlike surgical oncologists, who treat cancer through surgery, and radiation oncologists, who treat cancer through radiation therapy, medical oncologists treat cancer using medications like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy.

After a cancer diagnosis, a medical oncologist will partner with your family to explain the diagnosis, and discuss options with you, before creating a treatment plan tailored to your child’s unique needs, dreams, and goals. Once a plan is in place, they will manage the treatment and monitor its effect on your child’s cancer, making adjustments if needed to ensure success. They will also help your child cope with side effects of treatment, like pain, nausea, or fatigue.

Our medical oncologists are often part of a multidisciplinary team of doctors and other care providers from a variety of areas. That team may include oncology nurses, Child and Family Life Specialists, social workers, mental health providers, nutritionists, spiritual support, and integrative care specialists. They work together seamlessly to ensure that each child and family receives comprehensive care molded to their personal journey.

After treatment, our team also brings specialized follow-up care to children and families through our Childhood Cancer Survivor Program.  We can help your child navigate long-term physical and emotional side effects of treatment (known as late effects), educate them so they can maintain a healthy, active life, schedule follow-up screenings and, eventually, make the transition to adulthood and age-appropriate care.

M Health Fairview Pediatrics is the only children’s health system in Minnesota affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School and Masonic Cancer Center. M Health Fairview Pediatrics is also home to Minnesota’s only National Cancer Institute-funded Children’s Oncology Group Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Program. All of this means that our patients have access to leading-edge clinical trials and medical breakthroughs in devices, techniques, and technologies before they’re widely available. By offering breakthrough innovations and opportunities for advanced cancer therapies, we provide your child the best chance of long-term survival and health.
