At M Health Fairview, our optometrists and other eye specialists care for infants, children, and adolescents to improve their eyesight and their overall health and well-being.

Overview

Vision can be described simply as the ability to see, but for kids, there’s more to it than meets the eye. Good eyesight not only allows children to see clearly, it also helps them understand and navigate their environment, interact with others, and learn new skills. From motor development to cognitive abilities, a child’s eye health can have a significant impact on their overall growth. If your child is experiencing delays in their development or difficulty learning, it may be a sign of an undiagnosed vision or eye problem.

Our approach

At M Health Fairview, we provide comprehensive eye care for children and adolescents, which includes optometry. Our pediatric optometrists serve as the primary care providers for kids’ eyes. They assess eye health, provide vision care and eyewear services, and manage eye disorders that require non-surgical treatments. They work closely with ophthalmologists, orthoptists, and other specialists who provide surgical care for the eyes and treat conditions that are more complex.

Our pediatric optometrists provide the following services for children and adolescents at our clinics.

  • Perform eye exams and vision tests
  • Prescribe and fit glasses and contact lenses
  • Monitor eye conditions related to diseases like diabetes
  • Diagnose and treat eye disorders and conditions

Here are some signs that your child may have a vision problem and should be seen by an optometrist.

  • Failed vision screening at your child’s primary care doctor’s office or school
  • Eyes that are misaligned or don’t focus together (after 6 months old)
  • Eyes that flutter from side to side or up and down
  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
  • Complaints of headaches, discomfort, or fatigue
  • Short attention span (school age children)
  • Reluctant to read or holds books too close
  • Sits too close to the TV

If you have been referred for an eye exam by your primary care doctor or child’s school, have specific concerns about your child or teen’s vision or eye health, or need to schedule a routine eye exam, you can make an appointment with one of our doctors today.
