Overview

Quality sleep is essential to a child or adolescent’s overall health. When kids rest well, they are able to learn and develop normally, with plenty of energy for school and all their daily activities.

Insomnia, sleepwalking, narcolepsy, sleep apnea and other sleep disorders can get in the way of a good night’s sleep. At M Health Fairview Pediatrics, our team are experts at diagnosing and treating a wide range of sleep disorders in children of all ages. If your infant, child, or teen is having problems sleeping, our sleep medicine specialists can help them rest well.

Our approach

Our mission is to provide young people with the best quality sleep possible using the latest evidence-based sleep medicine methods. M Health Fairview Pediatrics is the only children’s health system in Minnesota that has an extensive academic partnership with the University of Minnesota Medical School, known for its leading-edge research and state-of-the-art facilities. Because of this partnership, we can offer the highest standard of care and technology to evaluate, test, and treat sleep disorders in children from age 0-18.

We use a variety of methods to diagnose and treat children and adolescents with sleep problems, including:

  • Sleep studies (polysomnography and CPAP titration)
  • Sleep latency tests
  • Actigraphy
  • Sleep-related breathing medication
  • Oxygen monitoring and therapy
  • Pre-operative assessment and surgery
  • Education on healthy sleep habits

We treat a wide range of sleep disorders, from the routine to the more complex. When you first visit with one of our pediatric sleep specialists, they will listen to your concerns about your child or adolescent’s sleep patterns and ask questions to learn more about their sleep health. Your child or teen may be scheduled for an overnight sleep study to evaluate their signs and symptoms. During the night, the sleep medicine team will monitor their breathing, oxygen level, brain patterns, and movements. Then, your doctor will review the results of the test with you and your child and create a treatment plan to address the root cause of their symptoms.

Our doctors specialize in both pulmonology and sleep medicine, so they’re prepared to deliver comprehensive care for pediatric patients with complex respiratory and sleep problems. Many sleep-related issues require a multidisciplinary approach with other specialists, including kid-focused pediatric neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, otolaryngologists, orthodontists, dentists, or primary care physicians. We coordinate care seamlessly with other specialties to ensure that your child receives the whole person care they need. We also work closely with advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, and polysomnographic technicians to coordinate care for our young patients.

If your child is having significant problems with sleep, it affects the whole family. Our team will discuss your goals for your infant, child or teen’s health, your family’s needs and hopes, and provide treatments that will help them achieve a good night’s rest. When your child or adolescent’s sleep improves, the whole family can relax and enjoy a peaceful night of rest.
