Incontinence is a treatable condition.

Overview

Children who experience daytime or nighttime wetting and soiling can suffer from low self-esteem and may have delayed social development. Fortunately, incontinence is a treatable condition.

Our approach

Common types of pediatric incontinence include:

  • Bedwetting
  • Stress incontinence
  • Urge incontinence
  • Bladder-sphincter dyssynergia
  • Overflow incontinence (lazy bladder syndrome)
  • Diurnal enuresis (daytime accidents)
  • Giggle incontinence
  • Urinary retention
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Constipation (often accompanies urinary incontinence)

Evaluation

There are many causes for incontinence in children, so your child should be evaluated by a physician. The treatment for these causes can be addressed by a physical therapist.

With a physical therapist, your child will undergo an evaluation to assess their pelvic floor muscles. The therapist will also check posture and evaluate lower extremity strength and flexibility as these often impact the ability of the pelvic floor muscles to contract or relax when needed. We will keep your physician updated throughout the entire process.

Treatment

Treatment includes biofeedback retraining for the pelvic floor muscles along with education about diet, toileting habits, and tips to improve pelvic floor function. Posture exercises and a progress tracking chart are also included. The treatment program will be tailored to your child’s needs and abilities.
